Winter Road Maintenance
The Public Works Department oversees the plowing and sanding of all Town roads. The Public Works crew plows and sands Harrison's roadways with Town owned trucks & equipment.

Snow Removal Reminders
  • Please do not plow snow onto Town-owned properties, including parks, fields and parking lots. Unless contracted by the Town, privately owned plow vehicles/equipment are prohibited from plowing snow onto Town properties.  Plowing or moving snow into or across Town roadways is also prohibited under Maine State Law.

  • If possible, wait until the roadway has been plowed before cleaning out the end of your driveway,  There is no practical way for crews to plow the roadways without depositing snow into driveways.

  • Help safeguard your mailbox post. The Town's plow operators take precautions to avoid hitting mailbox posts.  However, with reduced visibility and clearance during a storm, it is not always possible for a driver to avoid striking it with the wing of the plow.  Owners are encouraged to place mailboxes at the maximum usable distance from the roadway and maintain recommended mailbox height to ensure plow clearance.  Snow plow wing heights are approximately 39".  Mailboxes should be installed at least 48 inches high to provide clearance for the plow wing. We recommend the use of an extended arm type of post with a free-swinging suspended mailbox, again, as shown in the picture above. This allows snow plows to sweep near or under boxes without damage to supports and provides easy access to the boxes by your postal carrier.
Be Prepared for Winter Weather
  • If you do your own snow removal, remember to have shovels, snowblowers, sand and ice melt ready before the winter season.  Need sand for your walkways or steps? Sand is available for Harrison residents to assist with icy conditions. During the winter season, residents may pick up sand from the Transfer Station or outside the Public Works Facility during regular hours. Residents are welcome to collect two 5-gallon buckets of sand per household in preparation or response to storms or weather patterns that create icy and slippery conditions.
  • Do not drive during or immediately after a snowstorm unless necessary.  Crews have many hours of hard work to complete their snow clearing operation.  Less traffic during a storm means that we will be able to clear the roads more quickly and completely.
  • Be Patient. Remember, clearing the miles of roads that the Town is responsible for is an arduous and time consuming job.
