General Assistance NOTICE

Harrison has a General Assistance program for people in need.

This may include help paying for the following:

  1. Household or personal supplies (toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc.)

  2. Food

  3. Housing (e.g., mortgage, rent, by the room rent, and/or any temporary housing)

  4. Fuel & utilities (heating & electric etc.)

  5. Medical, dental, prescriptions, medical supplies/equipment

  6. Burial costs

 If you need help, your city or town is required to take your application for General Assistance.

Applications will be taken at the Town Office at the following times.

Hour(s): 9:00 am – 12:00 noon

Your city or town is required to have someone available 24-hours a day to take applications in an emergency.
In an emergency, applicants may contact Cumberland County Regional Dispatch Center at 207-893-2810 and if 
this is after Harrison Town Office normal business hours please contact Emergency or After Hours:

Your city or town must give you a written decision within 24 hours of receiving your application for General Assistance.

 If your city or town refuses to take your application, or if you disagree with a decision that was made or
have questions, you can call the Maine Department of Health and Human Services,
their toll free number is 1-800-442-6003. This phone is answered Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. 
If you call after 5:00 PM, leave a message and phone number, you will be contacted on the next business day.

 

Harrison has an ordinance describing the rules for its General Assistance program.
A copy is available at the Town Office as well as a copy of the State’s General Assistance law.

 

This notice is posted pursuant to Maine law at Title 22 MRSA §4304-4305.

HEAP: HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM Need help signing up for HEAP?
There will be HEAP staff in HARRISON at the Community Room above the Fire Station on Oct. 29, 2024, from 9 AM-4 PM 
 
Please do not forget to bring these documents.
Required documents:
  •   Government-issued photo ID for primary applicant (Driver’s license, State ID, EBT card w/photo, passport)
  •   SSN cards for all household members (or SSN verification documents: W2, 1099 tax form, US military document)
  •   Fuel vendor name and account #
  •   Most recent CMP bill (at least first page – we need the acct#, service address and the graph of usage)
  •   If an applicant is a CMP customer, the bill must be in the name of a household member in order to apply for any of the CMP low-income assistance programs.
  •   If rent is subsidized rent, then we need the housing certification letter (HUD form 50058/5005959 or RD 3560-8) that is in effect on date of application
  •   Proof of gross income for all household members: pay stubs for past 30 days or one month, SS award letter, pension benefit statement, and if self-employed then 2021 fed tax return, etc…
  •      Proof of SNAP or TANF benefits
